Animal Control

The ANIMAL CONTROL Program encourages good health care for animals in our county, especially to control the spread of rabies. This section:

  • co-sponsors, with local veterinarians, community rabies vaccination clinics
  • Picks up unwanted or stray animals, especially those with no tag
  • Investigates animal bites
  • Provides for "adoption" of homeless animals which end up at the animal shelter and
  • Enforces our county's animal control ordinance

How to file a Complaint:
An EMERGENCY complaint can be filed with any of the emergency numbers listed above.

All NUISANCE complaints are to be in writing and signed by the complainant:

  • A letter describing the problem and identifying the animal and owner, or,
  • A form available from Animal Control

The Nuisance Ordinance:
All dogs and cats have to have I.D. (This can be ID tags, tattoo or other device).
Nuisance behavior (click here to view Nash County Ordinance regarding Animals):

  • Damages property
  • Molests passersby, including cars and bikes
  • REPEATED barking, howling
  • Unsanitary conditions in a pen (odors)
  • Defecating in other yards
  • Attacks other domestic animals

The Process

When a written complaint is received about a violation of the ordinance, an officer is dispatched to investigate the complaint. If a violation is confirmed, an oral warning to stop the violation is given to the owner. If another complaint is received about the same violation, a written warning is issued. A third confirmed complaint will result in a civil fine, to be paid to the Nash County Health Department.
