Dietitian Services

Are available for area residents and may include:

  • diabetic education,
  • counseling to lower cholesterol, low fat, or sodium
  • education for pregnant women, postpartum and breast-feeding women, or children to help correct nutrition problems related to diabetes, low iron levels, pregnancy nausea, low weight gain, overweight, hypertension, eating disorders, cleft palates, AIDS, high lead levels,
  • or counseling to manage other medical problems that diet can affect.

Nash County’s dietitian is a Diabetes Educator and so can be very helpful to residents with diabetes. The dietitian can guide clients in developing a diet plan which will help manage blood sugars, she can assist clients in managing sick days, she can teach about proper foot care, she can answer questions about daily blood sugar testing, and she can work with physicians to plan a medication regime which will best control individual diabetes cases.
The dietitian will need recent lab work to best counsel clients. This can be faxed to (252) 459-9834 (Nashville) or (252) 985-4539 (Rocky Mount) or mailed to the health department prior to the appointment.

The dietitian uses protocols developed by the American Diabetes Association, including ADA Patterns of Care, in providing direction for clients. The dietitian can receive referrals from physicians or an individual may call and make an appointment for counseling.
