Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related deaths among women. According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes, and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes. Through Mammograms for Life!, Nash County Health Department is reaching out to all residents to increase the number of women receiving mammograms, as well as to educate on the importance of Breast Self Exam (BSE), clinical breast exams, and annual mammograms.
Mammograms for Life! is made possible because of funding from the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Triangle Affiliate. These funds allow Nash County Health Department to pay for mammograms and other diagnostic services for eligible women. Beginning at age 40 all women should have a mammogram annually. Because of risk factors, some women need a mammogram before age 40. Mammograms are the best tool for detecting breast cancer. A mammogram is able to detect cancerous lumps up to two years before they can be felt. Detection of breast cancer at an early stage provides a greater chance of survival and more treatment options. You may be eligible for a free mammogram even if you have insurance! Call the Nash County Health Department to see if you qualify.
Mammograms for Life! also focuses on breast cancer awareness through education intended to increase knowledge, and promote early detection. To arrange an educational session on early detection of breast cancer for your church, civic group, or organization contact the Mammograms for Life!
