Food Service Establishment Inspection Food borne illnesses are illnesses that can be transmitted through food or drink. Illnesses can range from minor gastrointestinal discomfort to severe gastrointestinal problems, vomiting, and viruses such as Hepatitis A. Public health Inspections of food service establishments help to prevent food borne illness by 1) teaching employees safe food-handling techniques, 2) grading the establishment based on use of these techniques, and 3) assisting the establishment in correcting problems which are lowering its rating. Inspections are made and sanitation ratings are assigned four times a year at restaurants, meat markets, day cares, mobile food units, and school lunch rooms; two times a year at institutions; once per year in places of confinement, motels, schools, and some other establishments; and temporary food stands are permitted and inspected for each event. Ratings are required, by law, to be posted for easy viewing by potential customers, allowing the public to choose the level of risk they want family members to experience when dining out. Again, restaurants, caterers, school cafeterias, daycare centers, elderly care cafeterias, meat markets, and many others are all inspected to protect residents from food borne illness. What's new on the wall beginning August 1? The new score card has a larger number so you can easily see the letter grade and the number score. It's bigger, it's clearer and it is easier to read! Why the change? State and local government work with the foodservice industry to make sure that food is safe to eat. The larger number is easier to see so it allows the customer to have more information when choosing a restaurant. Is the inspection different? No. The inspection process, inspection sheet, number of inspections per year and the points taken off for violations are still the same.
