Disinfection Procedures for Drinking Water Wells

NOTE: Emergency treatment of water: Hard boil water for one (1) minute before storing for drinking purposes.

NOTE: Make sure that the well is protected from surface or ground water contamination.

TREATMENT PROCEDURE

  1. Use the above table for proper amounts of disinfection.
  2. Mix with 3 to 4 gallons of water in a plastic pail.
  3. Dissolve and mix thoroughly with a clean wooden or plastic paddle.
  4. Pour contents into well.
  5. Turn on outside faucet and run water until chlorine odor appears.
  6. Take water hose from outside faucet to well and wash inside of well casing with chlorinated water.
  7. Turn on each cold water faucet inside the house until you smell the chlorine odor, then turn each faucet off.
  8. The entire cold water system needs to be disinfected for twenty-four (24) hours.
  9. Flush system through outside faucet. (Do not flush system into septic tank).
  10. Run water as much as well will supply to eliminate chlorine odor.
