Thursday drive-thru clinics offering flu, pneumonia shots

The Nash County Health Department will offer seasonal flu and pneumonia shots at drive-thru clinics this Thursday.
Flu shots will cost $32 and pneumonia shots will cost $52. The shots are free for those residents who have Medicare Part B. Those residents must have their Medicare card when they go to get the shots.
The drive-thru clinics will be open from 4-7 p.m. on Sept. 17. The clinics are for adults only.
Drive-thru vaccination clinics will be open at the Spring Hope Fire Department, Rocky Mount Farmers Market, Coopers Fire Department, and the Mount Pleasant Rescue Squad. A walk-in clinic will be open at the Red Oak Fire Department.
After Thursday, county residents can get seasonal flu and pneumonia vaccinations on Fridays at the Health Department office in Nashville from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. and in the Health Department office in Rocky Mount from 1-4 p.m.
Health officials are recommending that everyone get their vaccinations early this year to protect them against the flu and pneumonia bugs.
Flu kills about 36,000 people each year, most of them elderly.
More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications and 20,000 of those hospitalized are children younger than five years old.
Residents age 50 and older, children six months to 18 years, and adults and children with on-going health problems need a flu shot every year.
Women who are pregnant, those with household contacts with infants, and caregivers should also be vaccinated.
People age 65 and older need only one pneumonia shot in a lifetime.
The flu vaccination schedule for children and the H1N1 vaccination schedule will be announced later.
