Deputy Sheriff Rossell E. Gilliam End of Watch: Saturday October 11, 1975
Deputy Gilliam was struck and killed by a dump truck while directing traffic on US 264-A for the Boy Scout Jamboree. Deputy Gilliam had served with the Sheriff's Office for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.
The bridge on NC 231 over US 264 Bypass in Middlesex was renamed the Deputy Sheriff Rossell E. Gilliam Memorial Bridge in 2002.
Deputy Gilliam's name is inscribed on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. His name is located on Panel 52 East, Line 14.
RESERVE DEPUTY SHERIFF TIMOTHY C. BARNES
END OF WATCH: Wednesday July 28, 2010
Deputy Barnes collapsed while conducting physical training for the academy for the DMV License and Theft Bureau. Deputy Barnes had worked for the Nash County Sheriff's Office as a School Resource Officer for 10 years before deciding to take a position with the DMV in May 2010. Deputy Barnes remained a Reserve Deputy with the Sheriff's Office after leaving for his new position.
Deputy Barnes' name is inscribed on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. His name is located on Panel 21 East, Line 27.
INVESTIGATOR WARREN "SNEAK" LEWIS III
END OF WATCH: JUNE 9, 2011
Investigator Lewis was shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant for murder in Kinston, NC. He was serving at the time, on the U.S. Marshal's Eastern North Carolina Fugitive Task Force. Deputy Lewis had served with the Sheriff's Office for nine (9) years, with the last three (3) years on the U.S. Marshal's Task Force. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Investigator Lewis' names will be inscribed on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC in May 2012.
