KNOW YOUR DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

Questions and Answers about the Nash County Department of Social Services Office

What do I do if I suspect that a child is being abused or neglected?

Any suspected case of child abuse/neglect should be reported to your local department of social services. Reports can be made 24 hours a day. Reports can be made anonymously. Please DO NOT leave voicemail and DO NOT send email!

Can I make an appointment? What are your hours?

We do not make appointments for financial assistance for Food and Nutrition and Medicaid. Applicants are seen on a first-come, first-served basis daily, between the hours of 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday. If, for some reason, there is a wait to apply and the applicant cannot wait to be interviewed, or it is after 4:30pm, an appointment may be made.   Applicants are also seen on a first-come, first-served basis daily for Emergency Assistance and Crisis Intervention Program between the hours of 9am – 4 pm.

Can I get transportation and day care to go to school?

If you are receiving public assistance, you may be eligible to participate in our employment programs, which may make you eligible to receive both day care and transportation while going to school.

What do I need to bring in to make an application for assistance?

If available, your social security card, Medicare card, life insurance policies, health insurance, bank statements, or account numbers, and proof of any other assets you may have. This will greatly expedite any application you may make.
